Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. The aunt she had was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In 1990, she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. While she was still in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
